RESUMO

Antibacterial drug resistance of gram-negative bacteria (GNB) results in high morbidity and mortality of GNB infection, seriously threaten human health globally. Developing new antibiotics has become the critical need for dealing with drug-resistant bacterial infections. Cefiderocol is an iron carrier cephalosporin that achieves drug accumulation through a unique "Trojan horse" strategy into the bacterial periplasm. It shows high antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae and MDR non-fermentative bacteria. The application of cefiderocol offers new hope for treating clinical drug-resistant bacterial infections. However, limited clinical data and uncertainties about its resistance mechanisms constrain the choice of its therapeutic use. This review aimed to summarize the clinical applications, drug resistance mechanisms, and co-administration of cefiderocol.

Many governments have approved the use of oxytetracycline as an antibiotic additive to food fish, with oxytetracycline now routinely used in many nations. However, oxytetracycline is known to have immunosuppression impacts. We, therefore, evaluated the immunological, antioxidative, and histopathological status of Nile tilapia fed a diet containing silymarin (100 mg/kg fish feed) for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. The protective effects of silymarin against Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) infection and oxytetracycline treatment were evaluated. Blood parameters (erythrocyte count, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, and packed cell volume) improved over time in fish fed on dietary silymarin. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were lower in fish fed on dietary silymarin, whereas serum levels of aspartate transferase (AST)and alkaline phosphatase (ALK) were unchanged. Dietary silymarin affected serum lipid profiles as decreases in serum triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and a trend toward lower cholesterol levels, whereas serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were increased compared to fish fed on the control diet. Dietary silymarin resulted in an increase of serum total protein levels and globulin fractions. Significant and progressive increases in catalase and glutathione peroxidase levels were observed after six weeks of feeding on a dietary silymarin before decreasing to control levels at the end of the experimental period. Fish fed on dietary silymarin, interleukin-1 and fish tumor necrosis factor-alpha were upregulated in hepatic tissues; however, interleukin-10 levels decreased to comparable levels to controls after eight weeks. Fish infected with A. hydrophila displayed septicemia (opaque eye, hemorrhagic ulcers, dentated fins, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly). Reduced mortality was observed in Nile tilapia infected with A. hydrophila and fed a diet containing silymarin, indicating that silymarin improves fish responses to oxytetracycline with a 37% reduction in mortality.

The vertebrate mucosal barrier comprises physical and immune elements, as well as bioactive molecules, that protect organisms from pathogens. Vitamin D is a vital nutrient for animals and is involved in immune responses against invading pathogens. However, the effect of vitamin D on the mucosal barrier system of fish, particularly in the skin, remains unclear. Here, we elucidated the effect of vitamin D supplementation (15.2, 364.3, 782.5, 1167.9, 1573.8, and 1980.1 IU/kg) on the mucosal barrier system in the skin of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Dietary vitamin D supplementation (1) alleviated A. hydrophila-induced skin lesions and inhibited oxidative damage by reducing levels of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and protein carbonyl; (2) improved the activities and transcription levels of antioxidant-related parameters and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 signaling; (3) attenuated cell apoptosis by decreasing the mRNA and protein levels of apoptosis factors involved death receptor and mitochondrial pathway processes related to p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase signaling; (4) improved tight junction protein expression by inhibiting myosin light-chain kinase signaling; and (5) enhanced immune barrier function by promoting antibacterial compound and immunoglobulin production, downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, and upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines expression, which was correlated with nuclear factor kappa B and the target of rapamycin signaling pathways. Vitamin D intervention for mucosal barrier via multiple signaling correlated with vitamin D receptor a. Overall, these results indicate that vitamin D supplementation enhanced the skin mucosal barrier system against pathogen infection, improving the physical and immune barriers in fish. This finding highlights the viability of vitamin D in supporting sustainable aquaculture.

As multidrug-resistant pathogens emerge and spread rapidly, novel antibiotics urgently need to be discovered. With a dwindling antibiotic pipeline, antibiotic adjuvants might be used to revitalize existing antibiotics. In recent decades, traditional Chinese medicine has occupied an essential position in adjuvants of antibiotics. This study found that baicalein potentiates doxycycline against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. Mechanism studies have shown that baicalein causes membrane disruption by attaching to phospholipids on the Gram-negative bacterial cytoplasmic membrane and lipopolysaccharides on the outer membrane. This process facilitates the entry of doxycycline into bacteria. Through collaborative strategies, baicalein can also increase the production of reactive oxygen species and inhibit the activities of multidrug efflux pumps and biofilm formation to potentiate antibiotic efficacy. Additionally, baicalein attenuates the lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory response in vitro. Finally, baicalein can significantly improve doxycycline efficacy in mouse lung infection models. The present study showed that baicalein might be considered a lead compound, and it should be further optimized and developed as an adjuvant that helps combat antibiotic resistance. IMPORTANCE Doxycycline is an important broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used for treating multiple human infections, but its resistance rates are recently rising globally. Thus, new agents capable of boosting the effectiveness of doxycycline need to be discovered. In this study, it was found that baicalein potentiates doxycycline against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens in vitro and in vivo. Due to its low cytotoxicity and resistance, the combination of baicalein and doxycycline provides a valuable clinical reference for selecting more effective therapeutic strategies for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative clinical isolates.

Outbreaks of infections by Francisella orientalis represent one of the main obstacles to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) farming. It is responsible for acute mortality in fingerlings and juveniles. The main control measure available is oral antibiotic therapy. This study compared the therapeutic efficacy of the antibiotics enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline, the most commonly used antimicrobial, against francisellosis in juvenile Nile tilapia (O. niloticus). Fish were challenged with a virulent isolate of F. orientalis and treated with medicated feed containing one of two doses of oxytetracycline (100 or 300 mg/kg of live weight (LW)) or 10 mg/kg of LW of enrofloxacin. The positive and negative control groups received feed without antibiotics; the negative control group was unchallenged. The results showed that enrofloxacin at a dose of 10 mg/kg of LW is effective against francisellosis in juvenile Nile tilapia (O. niloticus). Treatment with oxytetracycline did not eliminate the pathogen from the infected host, and the surviving fish became carriers. Enrofloxacin was able to cure the fish of infection with F. orientalis. This study suggests that enrofloxacin is a better option for treating francisellosis in Nile tilapia (O. niloticus L.). It controls mortality and avoids the carrier state in the fish, thus reducing the possibility of recurrence in the affected batches.

Zinc is an essential element affecting immune responses in aquatic organisms. In the present research, the immunomodulating effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) was studied in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The minimum inhibitory concentration of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for Aeromonas hydrophila was estimated at 60 µg/mL. To evaluate the efficacy of ZnO NPs for improving disease resistance against A. hydrophila, three hundred fish were divided into 5 groups. Fish in the group T1 maintained on the control feed, T2 and T3 feed on ZnO at 60 and 30 µg/g, while T4 and T5 received ZnO NPs at 60 and 30 µg/g, respectively for 8 weeks. Immune responses were evaluated by determining the phagocytic activity, serum antibacterial activity, lysozymes, respiratory burst activity, and also gene expression of immunoglobin M-2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, heat shock proteins, IL-10, insulin growth factor 1, transforming growth factor-ß2, superoxide dismutase enzyme, and catalase enzyme genes. Results indicated that groups that received ZnO NPs have exaggerated immune response and upregulation in the most of expressed immune-related genes. After the feeding trial, all groups were experimentally infected with A. hydrophila, and the mortality rate was monitored. Among all the treated groups, a higher survival rate and disease resistance were observed for fish that received ZnO NPs at 30 and 60 µg/g. The inclusion of ZnO NPs in O. niloticus feed improves both fish immune response and disease resistance against A. hydrophila.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies evaluate the outcome of intravenous antibiotics to oral transition in Gram-negative bloodstream infection (GN-BSI), particularly GN-BSI originating outside the urinary tract. This study aimed to evaluate treatment success in patients with GN-BSI treated with either intravenous therapy or intravenous to oral transition and to identify factors associated with treatment failure in those undergoing intravenous to oral transition. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thailand. Patients were included if they were ≥18 years of age, hospitalized in general medical wards with GN-BSI between August 1, 2015, to July 31, 2020, received intravenous antibiotic agents and had a functioning gastrointestinal tract. RESULTS: Of 955 patients, 545 (57.1%) were in the intravenous to oral transition group. The urinary tract was the most common source of infection (38.8%). Ciprofloxacin was the most prescribed oral antibiotic (53%). Treatment success occurred in 94.3% in the intravenous antibiotic to oral transition group. There was no significant difference in treatment success between the two groups (P = 0.790) with a concordant result after using propensity score matching (P = 0.223). Independent predictors of treatment failure in the intravenous to oral transition group included metastatic solid cancer (aOR = 4.355), HIV infection with CD4 < 200 cells/mm3 (aOR = 8.452), qSOFA score ≥ 2 (aOR = 2.545), multidrug-resistant infection (aOR = 2.849), and respiratory tract infection (aOR = 8.447). Hospital length of stay in the intravenous to oral transition group was shorter than in the intravenous group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous to oral transition may be a practical approach in GN-BSI. Patients with Gram-negative bacteremia who have HIV infection with CD4 < 200 cells/mm3, multidrug-resistant infections, and respiratory tract sources of infection may not be ideal candidates for this approach. Future research is needed from a randomized controlled trial.

Quorum sensing (QS)-dependent gene regulation in bacteria performs a vital role in synchronization of cell-density-dependent functions. In Chromobacterium violaceum QS-dependent cviI/R regulatory genes are activated during the mid- or late-exponential phase of growth. However, sufficient evidence is lacking on the role of QS inhibitors on gene regulation at different phases of growth. Hence, we report the role of linalool, a natural monoterpenoid on QS mediated gene regulation at different stages of growth in C. violaceum by performing biosensor, growth kinetic and gene expression studies. In vitro and in vivo studies were performed for establishing role of linalool in reducing the virulence and infection by using HEK-293 T cell lines and Caenorhabditis elegans models respectively. C. violaceum CV026 with C6-HSL was used as control. The results showed linalool to be a QS inhibitor with an estimated IC50 of 63 µg/mL for violacein inhibition. At this concentration the cell density difference (delta OD600) of 0.14 from the compound was observed indicating the quorum concentration. The expression of cviI/R was initiated at mid-log phase (~ 18 h) and reached the maximum at 36 h in control whereas in treatment it remained significantly downregulated at all time points. The expression of violacein biosynthetic genes vioA, vioC, vioD and vioE was also downregulated by linalool. Infection studies with linalool showed higher survival rates in HEK-293T cell lines and C. elegans compared to the infection control. Taken together, this study proves linalool to be a QS inhibitor capable of attenuation of QS by controlling the cell density through cviI/R downregulation at the early phase of growth and hence offering scope for its application for controlling infections.

Background: This study investigated how the inclusion of Boesenbergia pandurata extract (BPE) in goldfish feed affects fish growth, immunity, and resistance to infection by Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas fluorescens.   Methods: Four fish feeds, were prepared by adding BPE at the concentrations of 0 (control), 2, 4, and 6 g kg-1, respectively, and 120 goldfish (Cyprinus carpio; initial weight 5 g) were separated into 12 boxes and fed with specific pellets and examined thrice. The experiment lasted 12 weeks, beginning with the different feeds, fish growth was measured at Weeks 4 and 8 after the feeding period. Moreover, a challenge test with pathogen bacteria to assay disease resistance was administered at Week 8 after the feeding period, and the survival rate and relative percentage of survival were quantified at Week 12.   Results: At Week 8, the goldfish that were fed BPE-containing feeds were significantly heavier than the fish that received the control feed (pellet without BPE), and the highest weight gain, reaching 72.44 g, was obtained with Pellet 3; accordingly, the specific growth rate after BPE treatment (5.7%) was higher than that after control treatment. Conversely, the feed conversion ratio in the control group, 2.03, was higher than the ratios in the BPE groups, which were decreased to 0.55-0.90. Lastly, BPE treatment consistently enhanced the immunity parameters of goldfish (relative to control treatment) at weeks 4 and 8, and following BPE treatment, the rate of resistance against bacterial infection, 68.3%-77.0%, was higher than that after control treatment.   Conclusions: BPE addition in goldfish feed clearly produces a positive effect by enhancing fish growth, immunity, and resistance to infection by pathogenic bacteria, and 4 g kg-1 is the optimal BPE concentration in feed prepared for goldfish.

Chromobacterium violaceum, a facultative anaerobic proteobacterium, is isolated from water and soil in tropical areas and has been implicated in infections like septicemia, visceral abscesses, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis and diarrhea. Chromobacterium violaceum sepsis, a rarely reported phenomenon has a very high mortality rate. Here, we report a unique case of Chromobacterium sepsis in an infant. A 48-day-old baby boy was referred to our institution with h/o fever, loose stools and reduced activity. He was intubated and referred to us in septic shock. Radiological investigations revealed multiple abscesses in the liver, spleen and kidneys. The infant was successfully treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin.

As an intermediate substance of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and a precursor substance of glutamic acid synthesis, the effect of alpha-ketoglutarate on growth and protein synthesis has been extensively studied. However, its prevention and treatment of pathogenic bacteria and its mechanism have not yet been noticed. To evaluate the effects of alpha-ketoglutarate on intestinal antioxidant capacity and immune response of Songpu mirror carp, a total of 360 fish with an average initial weight of 6.54 ± 0.08 g were fed diets containing alpha-ketoglutarate with 1% for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila for 2 weeks. The results indicated that alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation significantly increased the survival rate of carp after infection with Aeromonas hydrophila (P < 0.05), and the contents of immune digestion enzymes including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase and the concentration of complement C4 were markedly enhanced after alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation (P < 0.05). Also, appropriate alpha-ketoglutarate increased the activities of total antioxidant capacity and catalase and prevented the up-regulation in the mRNA expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, and interleukin-8 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) were strikingly increased after infection with Aeromonas hydrophila (P < 0.05), while the TLR4 was strikingly decreased with alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation (P < 0.05). Moreover, the mRNA expression levels of tight junctions including claudin-1, claudin-3, claudin-7, claudin-11 and myosin light chain kinases (MLCK) were upregulated after alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation (P < 0.05). In summary, the appropriate alpha-ketoglutarate supplementation could increase survival rate, strengthen the intestinal enzyme immunosuppressive activities, antioxidant capacities and alleviate the intestinal inflammation, thereby promoting the intestinal immune responses and barrier functions of Songpu mirror carp via activating TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB and MLCK signaling pathways after infection with Aeromonas hydrophila.

Abstract Objective The use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, such as third and fourth-generation, are responsible for emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in neonatal units. Furthermore, antimicrobial daily doses are not standardized in neonatology. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of antimicrobial broad spectrum to bacterial sensitivity profile in a referral unit of neonatal progressive care. Methods This is a cohort study conducted in a referral neonatal progressive care unit from January 2008 to December 2016. The data of all hospitalized neonates was collected daily. The infection criteria used were the standardized national criteria, based on definitions of Center for Diseases Control and Prevention. In this study, the use of antimicrobials was evaluated as antimicrobial-day (ATM-day) and the ratio of multidrug-resistant microorganisms per 1000 ATM-day of broad spectrum was also calculated. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (ETIC 312/08 e CAAE 58973616.2.0000.5149). Results From 2008 to 2016, 2751 neonates were hospitalized, corresponding to 60,656 patient-days. The ratio of multidrug-resistant microorganisms per 1000 ATM-day of broad spectrum was 1,3 in the first period and 4,3 in the second period (p = 0,005). Conclusion It was observed that use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, especially those with coverage for Gram-negative bacteria, was associated with an increase of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Leek (Allium ampeloprasum) is one of the most commonly used herbal foods all over the world. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of leek extract on catfish experimentally challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila, a problematic bacterial pathogen that affects various freshwater fish species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated and identified from catfish showing clinical signs of septicemia. The in vitro activity of leek extract to control the growth of Aeromonas hydrophila was investigated. In the in vivo experiment, about 240 adult catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were fed three different leek extract concentrations (10, 25 and 50 mg kg-1 body weight) for 1 month. Later on, a challenge study was conducted using an identified A. hydrophila strain. Morbidity and mortality were recorded throughout one week post-challenge. Furthermore, the effect of leek extract on some immune-related genes was investigated. RESULTS: Under the in vitro testing, a significant increase (10 and 13 mm) in the inhibition zone was recorded in wells treated with 25 and 50 mg L-1 leak extract, respectively. A significant reduction in fish mortalities was reported in all leek extract treated groups compared to the control group which was given water. TLR1 gene expression was upregulated in fish treated with leek extract while TNFα gene expression was down-regulated. CONCLUSION: Overall, results suggested that the leek extract has immunostimulating effects that can help control bacterial infections in catfish and probably other fish species.

To win the battle against resistant, pathogenic bacteria, novel classes of anti-infectives and targets are urgently needed. Bacterial uptake, distribution, metabolic and efflux pathways of antibiotics in Gram-negative bacteria determine what we here refer to as bacterial bioavailability. Understanding these mechanisms from a chemical perspective is essential for anti-infective activity and hence, drug discovery as well as drug delivery. A systematic and critical discussion of in bacterio, in vitro and in silico assays reveals that a sufficiently accurate holistic approach is still missing. We expect new findings based on Gram-negative bacterial bioavailability to guide future anti-infective research.

This study points to evaluate the effects of pre-treatment with standardized dry extract of Curcuma longa (Motore™) added to the diet (0; 250; 500; and 750 mg/kg) on oxidative stress parameters, longevity, and therapeutic success in Rhamdia quelen experimentally infected with Aeromonas hydrophila (MF 372510). After treatment, the liver and kidney were collected to determine non-enzymatic oxidative parameters such as the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), non-protein thiols (NPSH), and quantification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Also, two enzymatic antioxidant parameters were evaluated: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities. The results showed an increase of ROS and TBARS levels, a depletion in NPSH, and a decrease of SOD and CAT activities in infected fish compared to control. The highest Motore™ dose minimized the deleterious effect of A. hydrophila infection improving longevity, oxidative status, and survival rate. The addition of 750 mg Motore™/kg feed is recommended for silver catfish in fish farming. Serious economic losses in Rhamdia quelen culture caused by Aeromonas hydrophila infections can be prevented by the addition of Motore™ to the diet.

In the present work, a total 180 monosex male Nile tilapia fingerlings (15.73 ± 0.05 g) were stocked in 150-l FRP tanks categorised into four diet groups with triplicate each and fed with dietary nano-selenium-supplemented diets at different concentration (T1-0, T2-0.5, T3-1.0 and T4-2.0 mg/kg of feed) for 90 days and different nutrition physiological parameters (feed utilization, haematology, serum biochemistry), immune response and antioxidant were analysed during pre- and post-challenge against Aeromonas hydrophila. The study results depicted that significantly (p < 0.05) better growth and feed utilization (absolute weight gain, specific growth rate, average daily gain, protein efficiency ratio, food conversion ratio) found in fish fed diet supplemented with 1 mg/kg of nano-Se. Significantly (p < 0.05) improved haematological (red blood cells, haemoglobin, white blood cells, platelets) and serum biochemical parameters (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides) observed in the same diet group. The same trend was followed by immune parameters (nitro blue tetrazolium, lysozyme activity, myeloperoxidase, total immunoglobulin). Also observed the statistically (p < 0.05) improved antioxidant activities (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxides, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity) in the same diet group. Relative percent survival after the fishes challenged with A. hydrophila was significantly (p < 0.05) differed. The findings suggested that supplementation of 1 mg/kg of dietary nano-Se could able to ameliorate nutrition physiology, immunity, antioxidant activity and disease resistance in tilapia and proved that it may be one of the best element for fish farmers to increase the production in an economically feasible way.

OBJECTIVE: Aeromonas sp. infections are a recognized complication of medical leech therapy (MLT). In patients requiring MLT, ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole are commonly used to prevent such nosocomial infections. After a patient at our institution developed a MLT-associated multi-drug resistant (MDR) Aeromonas infection, we developed and evaluated a joint antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention protocol for MLT at our institution. METHODS: We describe a case of a surgical site infection with MDR Aeromonas following MLT that was resistant to typically prescribed prophylactic antimicrobials, and development of a new leech culture protocol to proactively monitor for antimicrobial resistance among our institution's leech supply. We also report the rates of MLT-associated infections prior to and following implementation of this protocol and the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles detected in leech culture at our institution. RESULTS: Between October 2014 and February 2018, 46 patients received MLT at our institution. Other than the case described in this report, no other instances of MLT-related infections were noted during this time period. Culture results from 22 leeches in six batches since February 2018 showed that all were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, TMP-SMX, and ceftriaxone. Since initiation of a leech culture protocol, no further cases of MLT-associated infections have been reported at our institution. CONCLUSIONS: In light of increasing antimicrobial resistance and the potentially devastating consequences of MLT-associated infections, institutions offering MLT should be aware of these risks and ensure that protocols are in place to minimize infection risks for patients.

Antimicrobial resistance is becoming a growing health problem, which has become a challenge for the physicians to control infection and also an economic burden on the healthcare. This increase in resistance to the present antimicrobial agents led the researchers to find some alternative and more efficient drugs which can fight with the resistant microorganisms more effectively. Hence, in silico approach is used to design some novel drugs against various targets of microorganisms. For effective virtual screening of the drugs, there is a need to know about the chemical structure and properties of the antimicrobial agents. Therefore, we have prepared a comprehensive database as a platform for the researcher to search for possible lead molecules. Antimicrobial chemotherapeutics database (ACD) is comprised of ~4100 synthetic antimicrobial compounds as well as ~1030 active antimicrobial peptides. The Antimicrobial peptides are mainly from biological sources but some of them are synthetic in nature. Only those compounds, which are found to be active against either bacteria (both Gram-positive and negative) or fungus, are selected for this database.The ACD database is freely available at URL: http://amdr.amu.ac.in/acd, and it is compatible with desktops, smartphones, and tablets.

Aloe vera is a traditional medicinal plant; however, its use in fish is fairly recent. We evaluated the effects of dietary A. vera on stress, innate immunity, and energy metabolism in pacu inoculated with Aeromonas hydrophila. For 7 days, 192 fish were fed with diets supplemented with 0% (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% of the plant extract and then inoculated with bacteria and sampled 3, 6, and 24 h later. All concentrations of A. vera reduced basal levels of cortisol, and 1.0% reduced cortisol levels more intensely 3 h after inoculation. A. vera increased the basal respiratory activity of leukocytes/RAL (0.5 and 1.0%), increased the serum levels of lysozyme (1.0 and 2.0%) 6 h after inoculation, and increased the activity of the complement system after 3 h. Spleen somatic index/SSI increased with 1.0 and 2.0% A. vera. A. vera also promoted metabolic effects. It increased basal levels of lipids in the liver and muscle, as well as hepatosomatic index (1.0%) and, 3 h after inoculation, prevented the reduction of serum triglyceride (1.0%) and reduced the mesenteric fat (1.0%). Bacterial inoculation increased RAL from 3 to 24 h and lysozyme levels at 24 h, increased serum cholesterol at 24 h, and decreased serum triglyceride from 3 to 24 h, regardless of A. vera. We concluded that A. vera offered for only 7 days had stress-reducing effects, stimulated innate immunity, protected triglyceride levels in blood, lipid depots in the liver and muscle, and directed the energy mobilization to visceral depots.
